Grand River Periodontics is led by one of the most credentialed periodontists in West Michigan - a UM graduate, Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and faculty member at one of the top dental schools in the world. By every clinical measure, this practice represents the highest level of specialized care available in the region.

But credentials alone don't tell the whole story, and Dr. Sinacola knew that. What actually sets Grand River Periodontics apart is something harder to put on a wall: the way they slow down when other practices operate on how fast they can get people in and out. The way they spend real time with patients.

By explaining, educating, partnering, no one leaves confused about what's happening in their own mouth. The way they treat referring dentists as true collaborators, not just a source of business.
The brand they came in with didn't reflect any of that.

The goal was to create an elevated brand that could hold both sides of who they are: the clinical authority and the genuine, un-rushed care each patient receives. Modern medicine delivered with unhurried, human care.

Grand River Periodontics

Together, we started to uncover what her brand is truly about.

When Dr. Sinacola created a Pinterest Board of inspirations, she didn't know how to embody those images, feelings, and visions into a brand.

Specifically, what makes her practice different, what she wants to stand for, and what she wants people to feel from working with her.

A common theme kept emerging: the feeling of being completely taken care of. Not just clinically, but informationally. Every patient leaves knowing exactly what is happening with their oral health, why it matters, and what comes next. They never have to wonder, never have to piece together notes from memory, never have to worry about whether their dentist and their periodontist are on the same page — because Dr. Sinacola's team handles all of it. The word that kept coming to mind was ease. The kind that only comes from being genuinely well-informed and genuinely well-cared for.

I drew a lot of inspiration from the name "Grand River." The name was originally chosen for its connection to Grand Rapids, but rather than leaning into the geography, I wanted to explore what rivers actually are - and how perfectly they represent the story of the practice.

Rivers are gentle and steady, which speaks to Dr. Sinacola's approach with patients managing periodontal disease for life. It isn't a hopeless diagnosis, it's an ongoing relationship; one where you stay informed, stay consistent, and feel in control of your own health.

Rivers run deep beneath the surface, which reflects both the depth of her credentials and the depth of care she has for each individual patient. Rivers connect places - just as GRP connects seamlessly with each patient's general dentist, so patients never have to worry about juggling multiple providers or relaying information between offices.

Lastly, rivers calm you simply by being near them, which is exactly the experience Dr. Sinacola has designed: a thoughtful interior, a warm and intentional team, a soothing color palette, and the quiet confidence of knowing you are in exceptional hands.

We wanted to take the brand in a direction where it felt clean and modern without feeling sterile and authoritative.

I asked Dr. Sinacola a lot of questions in order to fully understand the brand at its deepest core.

THE PROCESS

The creative direction came together around a clear intention: this brand needed to position Grand River Periodontics as the obvious choice for patients who value expertise, take their health seriously, and recognize that quality care is worth investing in.

When I looked at the competitive landscape, nothing communicated a first impression of elevated or refined. Grand River Periodontics had the opportunity to own that space entirely: understated luxury. The kind of brand that looks more like a refined spa than a regular dental office.

The river metaphor would run throughout everything; not as a literal logo of a river, but as a design philosophy. Flowing curves, organic shapes, gentle movement. The same way the practice itself flows - steady, intentional, never rushed.

Visually, the brand needed to look unlike anything else in the West Michigan periodontal market.

THE PLAN

For the primary typeface, I chose something softer than a typical medical font - slightly elongated letterforms with a fine serif on the ends of each letter. It's highly legible, but there's something about the way the letters are proportioned that slows you down just slightly as you read. That quality was intentional. It mirrors the unhurried pace of the practice itself.

The color palette does exactly what it needs to: deep navy for authority and depth, warm stone for approachability, soft blue for calm. Together they read as modern healthcare without reading as cold or clinical.

For texture, I took the brand colors and applied them to actual watercolor paper, building a series of background textures unique to this practice.

These textures carry the brand across social media graphics, website headers, and printed materials in a way that feels organic.

The illustrations follow the same logic: gentle river waves and curves, rendered in a style that's refined but warm.

The logo mark was where the concept came to life in the most precise way. I wanted it to embody the brand's clean, calming feel while quietly referencing the river without being obvious about it. The solution was in the letterforms themselves: I made the crossbar of the "G" soft and wavy, like the surface of a river, and let it flow naturally into the "R." The result is a monogram that feels refined and professional.

That same curve didn't stay in the logo. I pulled it out and used it as a recurring design element throughout the brand - a wave shape that appears as a footer element, a divider, a background detail. It creates visual continuity across every touchpoint, so the brand feels cohesive whether you're looking at a business card or a tablet screen in the exam room.

BUILDING THE BRAND

The biggest win with Grand River Periodontics wasn't any single design element, it was alignment. For the first time, every piece of the brand was telling the same story. The logo, the colors, the typography, the textures, the way a business card felt in someone's hand - all of it pointed back to the same truth about who this practice is and who it serves.

That alignment gave Dr. Sinacola something that's easy to underestimate until you don't have it: confidence. Confidence to make decisions. When a new touchpoint needed to be created  (a social graphic, a patient handout, interior design choices for the new location) she didn't have to guess. She had a brand with a strong enough foundation that every future decision practically made itself - saving her time, energy, and money.

That foundation was put to the test. Grand River Periodontics expanded to a second location, and because the brand was built to last rather than just to launch, the growth felt seamless. Everything scaled with ease.

Grand River Periodontics looks like exactly what it is: highly credentialed, thoughtful, and unhurried. A patient-centered practice that takes the time other practices won't. Now, every patient who encounters the brand knows it before they ever sit down in the chair.

Everything scaled with ease.

"I LOVE IT! It's so elevated compared to what we are doing. There's subtle river references and it feels really soothing and calming. The colors are amazing. I really, really love it! :) You're the best!"
